Instructor Workshop: Is AI Haunting Your Assignments? The Role of Writing in Your Field and Your Courses Now
Feeling discouraged–or enthusiastic–about how AI has affected your teaching? Unsure how, or even whether, to assign papers or writing in an increasingly AI-infused environment? This workshop will provide a collaborative space for instructors to share frustrations, success stories, and best practices for teaching with writing given the disruption caused by generative AI. Through guided discussion and shared resources, participants will (1) develop an understanding of the role writing plays in their disciplines and in their teaching and (2) (re)articulate an AI policy and consider assignment design that responds directly to their disciplinary and course-specific context(s) and their values for teaching and learning. Our goal is to help participants clarify why they assign writing, define the role they want AI to play (if any) in their courses, and develop policies and assignments that support those goals.
This workshop is for any instructor or teaching assistant from any discipline who is thinking about the role of writing in their classes.
This is the first in a three-part workshop series Writing Across the Curriculum is hosting on AI and teaching with writing. Future sessions offered in Spring 2027 will focus on assignment design and on working with colleagues in departments to create shared guidelines for teaching with writing.
Coffee and snacks provided.
